CHARACTER INFORMATION

Character Name: Alice
Age: 18
Canon: Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Canon Point: Post-Death
Character Information: character page. | first game scenario. | second game scenario.
Personality:

The game's protagonist's first impression of Alice is that she "looks harmless, but she makes a powerful impression." That's certainly one way to put it; Alice looks and talks like an innocent girl, but that façade is shattered fairly easily. She's infamous for her sadistic behavior; from using her subordinates as chairs to whipping them with her riding crop for speaking out of turn, Alice is not afraid to do anything to get what she wants. When she challenges the Vanguard's then-combat unit leader, Hawk, to a fight to usurp that position, she does so easily. According to rumors, the scars she made on Hawk's back formed the words "Alice's Pet." Given how she pushes him around and whips him for the better part of the game, it would not be out of the range of possibility for her to do that to assert her superiority.

She's incredibly resourceful, as well; she once had the ability to control monsters due to a pact she made with a demon, and when she lost that, she resorted to using devices to be able to manipulate them. She's even willing to go to extremes with no remorse; there are a few times where she instigates fights with the protagonists within city limits with no regard for civilian life, and another few times where she tries to or threatens to blow up a city. Her attitude within the group has, within the game, made her a polarizing figure, with groups of people either hating her with an unyielding passion or practically worshiping the ground she walks on.

No one in the Vanguard exemplifies the latter of those two positions better than Decus. His relationship with Alice goes long before the Vanguard, and after the events that occurred there, he declares his eternal loyalty and love for her. He says countless times through the game that he'd go to the ends of the earth for her, and he's not kidding -- he eventually dies taking a fatal blow for her.

Alice takes his love for her and basically uses it to will him into doing what she wants. He's not exactly thrilled about it, but he goes as far as burning cities to the ground because she asked him to. Even worse, she spurns him all the while; she calls him "Dumbo Decus," insults him constantly, and tries to make sure he knows it. It's not until he dies, however, does she finally admit that she loves him back; that doesn't really excuse the fact that she manipulated his feelings for her and used them to horrifying results.

Her inability to handle genuinely friendly and loving emotions probably goes back to her time at the orphanage. Half-elves are regarded by a large portion of the people as sub-human, so when Alice, a half-elf, was placed in the orphanage after the death of her parents, she was abused and mistreated by the owner and his sons. It's enough to make anyone distrustful, and Alice told Decus that, even after all their time together, she thinks that he could betray her at any point. Until the end, she's convinced herself that she's the only one she can trust in the whole world.

She's about as stubborn and tenacious as a cockroach when it comes to getting what she wants; she was one of the two people who were unaffected by the effects a magical MacGuffin that, when in close range to it, drove the individual insane. The other person had demonic powers that probably protected him from it, so it says a lot about how strong-willed she really is. She has to be, for her to achieve her goal of unyielding power. She hates her parents for dying because they were too weak to do anything about it (they were killed by monsters during a pilgrimage). She hates people who are, in her words, powerless but always have to interfere, considering them hypocrites. The irony reeks off of this due to her heavy reliance of things other than herself (the machines that control the monsters, Decus, her subordinates), something she's painfully aware of.
